Strategic Planning

Our Strategic Plan

The Foundation’s focus for 2023–2026 is on three key social drivers of health where we have strong partners, momentum, and history. These include Equitable Care and Coverage, focusing on increasing access to health insurance coverage and quality healthcare; Healthy Start, focusing on quality early childhood care and education; and Healthy Connections, focusing on increasing social connections and reducing social isolation.

Our Strategic Planning Process

The Foundation incorporated perspectives from our grantees and other key partners into our new plan. The insights we gathered helped us take a deeper look at community assets and challenges, and identify opportunities to help build healthier generations.

COMMUNITY CONVERSATIONS

The main themes of these conversations were that racism continues to be a public health crisis, that racial inequities are ongoing, and that caregivers and community organizations are under immense pressure to respond to community needs.

Participants underscored the need for the Foundation and other funders to continue collaborative efforts to address systemic racism and provide partners with flexibility and long-term support.

GRANTEE PERCEPTION REPORT

At the beginning of 2021, we conducted our fourth round of the Grantee Perception Report, an anonymous survey conducted by the Center for Effective Philanthropy (CEP). The survey allows us to see change over time and compare ourselves to nearly 300 foundations nationwide. We will continue to use these surveys to help guide our future strategic planning. You can view the full results of the 2021 survey here. Highlights include:

Areas of Growth and Strength

  • We’ve grown our impact on local community and nonprofit organizations, our understanding of the fields in which our partners work, and our funder-grantee interactions. We believe this is due to our focus on trusted relationships, as we strive to keep our grantees at the heart of all we do.
  • We’ve built a solid infrastructure to advocate for public policies that improve health. We recognize that advocacy is a powerful tool for systems change, and an essential component of our comprehensive approach to support grantee partners and advance the field.
  • We’ve built and supported robust relationships. Based on our grantees’ responses about our responsiveness, fairness, transparency and openness to ideas, CEP reports we have “exceptionally strong funder-grantee relationships.”
  • Our commitment to advancing racial and health equity and combatting racism is strong, and grantees encourage us to continue enhancing that commitment.

Opportunities for Improvement

  • Ensuring that communications are consistent across all channels.
  • Continuing our ongoing efforts to streamline processes.
